Mornings for Members

The Mornings for Members guided walks are among the most popular ways for Foundation members to experience the properties that they are all helping to preserve and protect. Held predominately during the Summer and Fall months, these walks showcase a variety of conservation lands throughout the Island and are designed to explore a wide range of ecological, geological and historic features. In addition to learning about the natural attributes of the different properties, participants also learn about the Foundation’s ongoing research projects and conservation efforts. While most outings are guided walks, there are also less strenuous opportunities for bird watching at Eel Point, visiting the Foundation’s flock of sheep at Squam Farm and viewing the picturesque cranberry harvest at the Milestone Cranberry Bog in the Fall. Every walk has its own particular charm and is an enjoyable way for members to meet and share their interests in helping to preserve Nantucket’s pristine open spaces.

The Mornings for Members program is led by Allen Reinhard, assisted by the staff of the Foundation’s Science & Stewardship department. Having lived on the Island and served as the Foundation’s Middle Moors Ranger for 20 years, Allen is a wealth of knowledge regarding the geology and history of the properties. At least one of the Foundation’s scientists accompanies Allen on each outing in order to further add expert, detailed information about the unique, and often rare, flora and fauna that live on Nantucket.

All Foundation members are invited to join us on one Mornings for Members walk per year. Due to the popularity of the program, reservations for the walks are on a first-come, first-served basis. The available spots on each walk often fill up quickly, so we request that you also include an alternate choice when you contact us. Once your request is processed you will be e-mailed a confirmation letter and directions to the trailhead. (If you do not have access to e-mail, please call the Foundation office (508-228-2884) to submit your request.) All walks will begin at 8:30 am and last approximately two hours. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and be prepared for inclement weather.

Please note that this program is reserved for active members of the Foundation. If you are not currently a member or are unsure about your membership status, you may call us at 508. 228 .2884 or enroll HERE.

New for 2010- Rantum Scoots

A Rantum (not random) Scoot is an old Nantucket expression for “a pleasant journey with no objective other than pure enjoyment.”  This year we are introducing two Rantum Scoots on our Middle Moors property. These walks differ from the traditional Mornings for Members outings in that they are designed for longer, uninterrupted excursions.  Members of our Science and Stewardship department will host the walks and be on-hand to answer questions along the route but the intent is more for continuous walking and exercise.  The primary goal of the series is to introduce people to new and different walking trails on Foundation properties throughout the Island.  The trails will be easily navigable to encourage people to come back and use on their own. While they will range in length and difficulty they will generally be in the 3-4 mile range over moderately difficult terrain.  Members are encouraged to bring their friends and guests on these walks.
Participants are encouraged to bring water, bug repellant and sun protection.
